Icelandic Fish and Chips

Address: Tryggvagata 1

Across the street from the Reykjavik harbour is the organic bistro Icelandic Fish and Chips. If you are familiar with the traditional meaning of fish and chips you are in for a surprise. Unlike the unhealthy version so popular in Great Britain and elsewhere their fish and chips menu is organic and much healthier.

Their batter is made from spelt and barley, giving it a unique lightness and crispness, as well as various health benefits from the complex carbohydrates in the grains. Their potato chips (baked instead of fried for taste as well as the health benefits) are made by hand in their kitchen just like the homemade dressing they call "Skyronnaise". If you're familiar with the Icelandic dairy product Skyr, the main ingredient in Skyronnaise, you know to expect great things. The Skyronnaise is available in 10 different flavours, ranging from basil and garlic to truffle.

The menu is cleverly set-up so that each customer can choose his own combination of fish, chips and side items. That way you are not limited by pre-selected combinations and if you are not sure what to pick the staff, will gladly help you pick a good blend.

The menu doesn't specify any specific kinds of fish, because the fish on offer changes daily, including, but not limited to Cod, Haddock, Ling, Wolf fish, Red Fish, Blue ling, Tusk, Plaice and Pollock. This gives the chefs the opportunity to use only the freshest catch of the day.
Icelandic Fish and Chips is a casual restaurant so there is no need for dressing up. If you are planning to go on a whale watching tour from Reykjavik harbour then this is a perfect place to charge your batteries before or after your tour.
